Well it's that time of year again. Another loved one has to check out. Ever since my grandfather died over 3 years ago, every year has been followed by another death. This year it will be my cat, Fred. He has just been diagnosed with a type of cancer called Lymphoma(a very commen cancer among cats). We, meaning my father and I, have only 3 routes to go down.

1) Chemo Therapy.
Pros: Could extend his life for up to a year.
Cons: Could decrease the quality of his life, forcing him to deteriorate faster. Extremely expensive. Loss of weight and appetite, both which he can't afford to lose at this point.

2) Oral Medication.
Pros: Less costly. Could shrink the tumor.
Cons: Fred refuses to take medication.

3) Death.
Pros: Fred will not be forced to endure countless therapies, medications, and vet visits.
Cons: Fred's death could be extremely painful. Our hearts will ache even more because there isn't enough time.

We have chosen Number 3. There is no way we can enhance the quality of his life. He just wants to be home with his family. Why not give him that? He will go when he's ready. Hopefully he doesn't experience too much pain. If so, the possibility of euthanization might be involved. Otherwise, he will die in the only home he has ever know with the people he grew up with and with his feline brother Norton, who he accepted into our family when he was just a kit. Fred is stubborn. Leave it up to the stubborn cat to get the stubborn disease. Every day I watch him get weaker, eat less, and the tumor grow. It will only be a matter of time before he leaves us.
